I’m a lifelong sailor who’s been fortunate enough to sail with some of the best sailors in the world having crewed in four America’s Cups from 1974 to 1987. Of all the people I have sailed with, Jahn Tihansky stands out as the complete package. His overall knowledge of all aspects of the sport is second to none. He’s a great on-the-water coach and lecturer on sail trim, tactics and strategy, seamanship, weather and safety. He has honed these skills having been a sailmaker, owner of Annapolis J World sailing school, and 18 years as the head offshore sailing coach at the Naval Academy. There are hundreds of Naval officers out in the fleet today that benefited from “JT” being their coach, passing on to them his seamanship
and leadership skills. Having sailed with Jahn in three Newport-Bermuda races,
I wholly recommend him if you’re looking to up your game—whether it be cruising or racing, you’ll be learning from the best.

We already had a successful offshore program on Actaea when Connie and I decided to hire Jan Tihansky to see if he could help us get to the next level. Jahn taught us regularization of evolutions, better placement of crew on board and, above all, he taught us communication. He did all this while adapting himself to a new platform; there are not many serious racing yawls left. He emphasized that the removal of the randomness inherent in all sailboat racing was critical to achieving one’s goals on the racecourse. It was money well spent; his lessons influence our sailing to this day.
